Conditions for Impact

Biji Social Impact is an enabling organisation. We create the conditions where social impact can grow — connecting partners, opening doors, and legitimising the work.

The "Seed and Soil" narrative. This is the core of the enabling strategy

A seed contains everything it needs to become a plant. But it cannot grow alone. It needs soil, moisture, light, and time. Without those conditions, it remains dormant.Biji is the soil, it nurtures the seed--at the core of the 'Biji' identity.
We strive to create the conditions that allow the seed to become what it already has the potential to be.
The spark belongs to the farmer. The conditions belong to Biji SOCIAL IMPACT.

Empowerment through ownership and opportunity

People should have meaningful influence over decisions that affect their lives, along with the resources and opportunities to act on those decisions. For Biji, empowerment means supporting people to exercise that influence — not doing it for them. Our contribution should strengthen their ability to make choices and sustain progress over time.

Respect for knowledge and experience

Effective work begins with understanding what people already know and do. Farmers understand their land, local organisations understand their communities, and older generations hold knowledge built through years of experience.

Innovation with a practical purpose

We are interested in ideas and technologies that address problems people face in their daily lives. Their value depends on whether they are affordable, accessible, and appropriate to local conditions.

Three areas of interest. Not programmes. Interests.

1. Food and livelihoods across generations.

Smallholder farmers and fishers, rural communities, and the businesses that produce, process, and distribute food. Particular attention to women, younger and older people, and those who face barriers to knowledge, technology, finance, and markets.

2. Livelihoods in a changing climate.

Changes in rainfall, temperature, and the frequency of extreme weather affect both food production and household income. We work with partners on approaches suited to local circumstances — water management, soil health, crop selection, and preparation for floods and droughts.

3. Access to useful technology and finance.

Technology and financial services can widen opportunity when they reflect the circumstances of the people using them. We support access to practical tools, market information, suitable finance, and customers.

The First Initiative: Farmer Catalyst

Farmer Catalyst helps smallholder farmers in Southeast Asia adopt practical, open source technologies that improve how they farm — and how they earn. It is the proof of concept. It is what happens when the conditions are right.

Working together to bring about change

Biji Social Impact is seeking relationships with people and organisations prepared to contribute to practical, meaningful change in Southeast Asia. We welcome conversations grounded in a clear understanding of the issues, the people involved and what each participant can bring to the work. For funders and founding supporters
Founding support will make it possible to establish a capable organisation, develop local relationships and undertake the first practical trials.
For researchers and technology developers
We welcome ideas with the potential to improve livelihoods, food access or people’s ability to respond to climate pressures, and we are particularly interested in those willing to test ideas in everyday conditions.
For community groups and local organisations
We would like to hear from organisations with close knowledge of their communities and a clear sense of what they want to achieve.
